CSC 213 - Introduction to Networking

This area of my website is dedicated to students of my networking class - CSC 214. From here they can view and print handouts from classes that they may have missed or lost the handouts to.

Network Protocols and the OSI Model

Information is transmitted from one communications device to another over a communications medium. The information is sent over this medium in what is called packets or frames, each packet or frame represents part of (or a piece of) the information to be sent – the information to be sent is broken up into packets or frames, sent over the medium, received at the other end, re-assembled, and then reconstructed to form the original information that was sent.

The Purpose and Roles of Clients and Servers

As we have discussed previously a client is a computer that allows a user or users to log on to the network and take advantage of the resources available on the network, whereas a server is a much more powerful computer that administers the network and its resources (Habraken, page 15). From this we can deduce that the role of the server is resource administration and management, whereas the role of the client is resource utilisation.
